What's Your Treasure?

My favorite time of the year begins tonight. The grass will be freshly cut. Lines will be painted. Logos will stretch across the 50 yard line and the name of you favorite team will be on display in each end-zone. Can you smell it? The smell of tailgating fills the air along with the sounds of fans as they gather to support their respective teams. It's time! Time for the marching band to play the fight song, cheerleaders to run with their team's flag, and for two teams to enter the coveted gridiron that we know as college football (Roll Tide)!

Yes, it is time for college football season! I wait, in anticipation, for the beginning of the new season to see how my team (Alabama) will fare against other teams around the conference and country. I will cheer fanatically, sing the fight song, be a coach (and referee), enjoy tailgate foods, and passionately cheer to the very end of the game. This is not uncommon for fans around the country to experience the same things each Saturday during football season. We all want one thing... a championship! Not just any championship, a national championship.

Then, the next day many of us will face a decision. Do I sleep in or do I attend worship with my church family?

In Matthew 6:19:21, Jesus continues His sermon on the mount and He says, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

This has always been a hard verse for me, because my worldly-mindedness wanted to place my treasures elsewhere beside in the one person who could provide to me true treasures.

Be careful where you place your happiness. Those things that are temporary, like college football, will eventually pass away. Let me remind you, Christ's disciples had left everything to follow him (Matt. 4:20). What are you willing to leave behind to follow Christ?

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33, "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

What treasure does your life reflect? Where have you placed your passion? When people look at your life, what do they see? Do people see Christ in you?

We live in a world where we place our treasure in our jobs, sports, family, service organizations and we forget that letting our light shine and seeking Christ first in all that we do is a direct commandment from God.

I pray that we would have the same enthusiasm for attending a college football game that we would have when we attend worship.

I want my treasure to be Heaven. What about you and what are you willing to do to make sure your treasure is Heaven? After all, I believe we want the same thing for each other... an eternal championship with our reward being Heaven!
