What are you giving to God? As Christians we are to be servants for Him; we are to imitate Christ in all ways. We are also commanded to give. Here are four things we are commanded to give--Our Money, Our Hearts, Our Time, and (ultimately) Our Life.
We have been commanded to give our money to God and those who do his work. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 tell us to give cheerfully and generously. Paul also says in this passage to predetermine how much you will give. This is very important. It helps us put thought into how much we will give and helps us stay consistent with our giving as well. The "I ran out of money this week" doesn't work if we predetermined how much we were going to give. We must also remember 1 Timothy 6:17-19 and 1 John 3:17. These are essential when talking about giving our money to further God's will.
We have been commanded to give our heart to God.
We need to fully give our heart to God. This takes trust (Proverbs 3:5). We need to trust God with all of our heart, even when it gets tough. When we sing the lyrics "Mold me and make me after your will" we need to mean it (or don't sing it).
We also need to give our heart to God out of a genuine love for Him. Jesus tells us in Matthew 22:37 to "...love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind". Are we living our lives showing Him that love? Jesus said "anyone who loves me will obey my commandments" (John 14:23). Are were living our lives that show Him genuine love?
We have been commanded to give our time to God. Time is not a promised blessing. We do not know when our life will be over, and we do not know when Jesus is coming back. Sadly, we live as if we have "forever". We spend our time doing the things we want to do instead of the things God commanded us to do.
Jesus said to "seek first the kingdom of God" (Matthew 6:33). Do we spend time in God's Word (Psalm 1:1-2; Proverbs 16:20; Proverbs 29:18; Acts 17:11)? Do we spread the gospel of Christ (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 10:10-17)? Are we striving to do all that Christ did on this earth (John 14:12)?
All of this leads up to the final question: Are you giving your ENTIRE life to the LORD?
