When God and I Disagree

Ask anyone who is wavering in their faith or has abandoned faith altogether, and you will find their doubt and disillusionment frequently has its roots in a disagreement with God. The reasons for disagreement with God are numerous and powerful enough to cut at the very roots of our faith if we allow them: Perhaps our worldview conflicts with God’s, because we are shaping our worldview from the values of the earthly kingdoms around us. Perhaps we have a sin that we desperately do not want to be sin. Often, we disagree about something that has happened in our lives - why did God allow us to suffer through that sickness/death/job loss? Even more often, we may disagree with God’s doctrinal truths - finding ourselves making up excuses to fellow acquaintances about God’s view on women in leadership, reality of Hell, and other equally “unpopular” Biblical topics.

“The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” (Titus 2:11-14)

The GRACE of God is a much bigger concept than we can ever comprehend. The hymns have tried: “Marvelous grace…infinite grace…amazing grace…matchless grace...deeper than the ocean and wider than the sea…” And if we look for as complete a pictures as the Scriptures will allow of what grace entails, we will find it more amazing than we ever even suspected. And this beautiful description of the grace of God from Titus will help us discover some of the depths.
