We had a week off last week. There will be a few of those throughout the year. It is good for the mind to rest from time to time - even from a good exercise. And now we are back at it.
We come this week to one of a series of statements from Jesus which have a tendency to cause us some issues. What is Jesus doing here? Is he speaking grandiose statements meant only for effect? Is he speaking hyperbole? Or is thinking angry thoughts literally the same as murder? It is from statements such as these that many derive a thought process that concludes “all sin is equal.” We will explore this line of reasoning over the next couple of weeks. In one sense, there is a measure of equality with all sin, but to say that all sins are the same leads us down a path I am not certain we were intended to travel.
“You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Fool!’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But whoever says, ‘You moron!’ will be subject to hellfire.
Grace to you and peace from God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
