This Week's Memory Work - Upside Down

Is one sin more severe than another? Is all sin the same? In my experience, I have spoken with many who vacillate between these two beliefs. There are some who will come to this series of passages to demonstrate the belief that all sin is the same? But Jesus is not equating lust with adultery. Why then is there this parallel between the thought of the mind and the action associated with it. Simply speaking, Jesus is urging to be pure of heart. If the thoughts of the mind are pure, righteous action will follow. The Law was focused on action and obedience, but the teachers had ignored the heart behind the obedience. Jesus continues to turn cultural norms on their head by emphasizing with greater boldness the motivation behind our obedience.

Matthew 5:27-28

“You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Grace to you and peace from God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
