The memory verse this week takes last week’s a step farther. It is sensible to imagine how much division can come when we hold a grudge or harbor hurt against a brother or sister. Here in these verses Jesus urges his followers to hold nothing between their adversaries. Interestingly, Jesus’ instruction is not solely Christ-like, but it is also very practical. Don’t allow anything to stand between you and anyone, even an adversary. We should have no obstacles to communication and reconciliation. But also, the people of the world do not have the same sense of grace and mercy that followers of Christ have.
Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I assure you: You will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny!
Grace to you and peace from God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
